The forest seen in the reserve is tropical in nature with a mixture of deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen shola forest. The forest is very dense and plush with tall grass, thick shrubs and myriad tree varieties, and this thick vegetation provides good cover and nourishment for animals. This diverse flora houses trees such as teak, rosewood, terminalia, sandalwood, mango tree etc.  The reserve is a peaceful habitat for different mammals including Indian elephants, Nilgiri Lagur, Lion-tailed macaque etc. A boat ride through the Periyar lake will provide sumptuous opportunity to witness the charm of the sanctuary and its endless store of nature.
