Marayoor, a place 42 km north of Munnar in Idukki district, is an idyllic location with stunning natural beauty. Its extensive sugarcane cultivation spread in approximately 2500 acres of land and jaggery industry is very well-known. Situated at an elevation of 5200 ft., it has the largest naturally growing sandal wood forest, the only place in Kerala with the rarest phenomenon. The geography of Marayoor is characterised by rain forest, paddy fields, waterfalls, rivers, and rocky hills. It is a forest rich in diverse wildlife.
Marayoor is believed to be part of the stone age civilisation dating back to 10,000 BC, for, the presence of dolmen, and cave rock carvings hint at prehistoric life. Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is very near to Marayoor. For adventure seekers, it offers brilliant trekking routes also.
