Boothathankettu is a location known to have connection with mythical characters. It is believed that bhoothas (demons) once tried to construct a dam across the river Periyar and they left the place before it was completed with the intervention of Lord Shiva. As a testimony to this, debris of large blocks of unshaped stones which look like real are still visible here.

This ecotourism destination is frequented by a good number of tourists. The entire stretch is an interesting location for trekking and it will take one or two hours to cover the entire area. One can enjoy the dense forest and its sky-high trees and flora varieties. On the way, we can see a huge Cheeni tree from which loud sound will come upon knocking with a stick. Tribals use this frightening sound to drive back animals, especially elephants into the forest. A boat ride is an ideal option to explore the natural beauty here.
