Kathakali is a classical performing art belonging to the state of Kerala. It is believed to have evolved into the artform what we see today approximately 300 years ago. Kathakali blends dance, music and acting into one. As a majestic artform, once played in temples, royal courts, and palaces, it has acquired admirers from around the world because of its charm and uniqueness.

Kathakali retells a story through acting and corresponding vocal music called ‘kathakalipadam’ accompanied by musical instruments such as chenda, mridangam, idakka and chengila.   The stories for the performance are either taken from the local myths or Indian epics.

Acting involves facial expressions and intricate and stylised finger signs called ‘mudra’ with which the kathakali performer communicates the story with great perfection. Extravagant costumes including ornamental headgear, jacket, and skirt-like dress and heavy make-up are marked features of kathakali.   There are 4 types of make-up – ‘kathi, kari, pacha & minukku’- based on the character the performer intends to do.
