Guruvayoor Srikrishna temple is one of the most prominent Hindu pilgrimage centres in Kerala. According to the legend the deity in Guruvayoor is more than 5000 years old. The central shrine of the temple is believed to have been rebuilt in AD 1638.  Most of the current temple structure dates to the 16th and 17th centuries. There are two Gopurams – East Nada and West Nada – at the temple. Lord Krishna is the main deity and he is worshipped in the child form here. ‘Ekadasi’ is one of the main festivals celebrated in the Malayalam month of Vrishchikam. The renowned temple attracts tens of thousands of devotees round the year from all over the world.

This is also the place where Kerala Gandhi, K Kelappan launched the ‘sathyagraha’ in 1931-32 to secure temple entry for the untouchables.
