Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungallur is the first and oldest mosque in India built by Malik bin Dinar, an Islamic propagator in 629 CE. It is believed to have been constructed during the reign of Chera dynasty. According to the known history, the mosque has been undergone several renovations, the major being in the 11th and 18th centuries. However, the core architecture has been preserved without much alterations. The entire construction has followed a Kerala style architecture and it is an epitome of our legacy in the past. An ancient oil lamp, which is believed to have been burning from its origin, has been kept at the mosque, and it is an important attraction in the mosque. People irrespective of their religious affiliations come to pray at this mosque.
