Tribals in Kerala are the indigenous population living in the forest areas of Western Ghats neighbouring the states of Tamilnadu and Karnataka. They are the original inhabitants of this region and these people are believed to be living there for several centuries. Vellamthode and Palakkayam near Nilambur in Malappuram district of Kerala is known for its tribal population belonging to various communities. Muthuvan, Kattunaikkar, Cholaniakkar, Aranadar, Kadar and Paniyar are the primitive tribal sects primarily found here. Basically, they are food-gatherers. Their indigenous knowledge associated with wild edible and medicinal plants will surprise anyone.
