Kovilmala, commonly known as Kozhimala, is the only existing tribal kingdom in South India. This tribal settlement is situated in the Idukki district of Kerala state. The community belonging to Mannan community follows unique customs, traditions, and form of governance. They consider Goddess Madhura Meenakshi as their ‘Kuladevatha’ (tutelary deity) deity.
The administrative head of the community known as ‘Raja Mannan’ is elected by the people. He is responsible for the 42 Kudis (settlements) spread over various parts of Idukki. Currently, Kozhimala is ruled by the 16th King of the tribal dynasty. The inheritance system among them is based on the matrilineal system. ‘Kalavoottu’ is the annual festival celebrated as a tribute to the nature for blessing them with adequate harvest.
