The traditional handloom weaving in Kerala has a history that spans over more than 500 years. Almost every district in Kerala has its own share of handloom industry, however, three major locations of Kuthampully in Thrissur, Chendamangalam in Ernakulam and Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram are historically important due to its concentrated activities in traditional weaving. Weavers from our neighbouring states were brought here and they established a flourishing industry in these villages.
Kerala handloom products are famous for their intricate designs, fine craftsmanship and beautiful textures. Today, the glory of handloom products is known widely through the products like ‘mundum neriyathum’, ‘Kasavu mundu’, Veshti, and ‘set mundu’.
