Jaggery is the dark brown sugar balls extracted from the condensed sugarcane juice. In Kerala, though, in many isolated areas sugarcane is cultivated, the extensive cultivation of it is found in Marayoor and Kanthallor, places in Idukki district, 42 kms away from the town of Munnar. There is more than 2500 acres of sugarcane cultivation in these two localities combinedly. Jaggery produced at this place called ‘Marayoor jaggery’ has attained the GI (Geographical indication) tag, given for a product which has a specific geographical origin, possess unique qualities and reputation due to its origin. There are many jaggery manufacturing units run by farmers and they themselves are very skilled in making jaggery using traditional method. Among Indian households the unique Marayoor jaggery has a special place.
